"Captain Phillips" (Starring Tom Hanks) -- Trailer REVIEW

Directed by Paul Greengrass (TheBourne films) and starring Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips tells "the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. (IMdB)."
What do you see when you look atCaptain Phillips? A modern day "Pirate" movie with a talented director and a very good Actor. From the guy who brought us the Bourne movies, I expect that this film will be filled to the brim with moments that stop your heart, freeze it, then force you to thaw it out as you try and return back to the world of reality; and with Tom Hanks starring, you should expect to be waiting for a while.
I watched this trailer on the edge of my seat while knowing full well that nothing major would be revealed and at the same time being able to predict everything that was going to happen; which to be is just a testament to how well-directed this movie is going to be. Now, obviously that made is sound like the movie is predictable, which is not what I am trying to say at all. This is just the trailer, and therefore it should almost be predictable. The fact that even though I was able to guess what was going to happen next and it still kept me intrigued shows how well done this movie will be. Everything that Greengrass wanted me to feel, I was feeling. The excitement, tension, helplessness; the whole nine yards. And if he is able to keep that up for the entire movie, well then we will be in for a treat.

Then there is Tom Hanks, an extremely talented actor who is quite capable of giving an intense performance, and for a movie like this, that will definitely come in handy. The movie is quite obviously meant to be an intense, stomach turning movie that will throw one obstacle after another at you to keep you entertained. And Tom Hanks, I feel, is more than capable of giving a performance that displays that; he did it in Castaway, and Saving Private Ryan, and he looks as though he will do it again.
The Fact that it is based on a true story is only going to get me thinking even more: What would I have done. When I watched the trailer I though to myself every step of the way: "What would I have done?" Without seeing the full movie I was putting myself into Captain Phillips position and thinking: "What. Would. I. Have. Done?"
The Cinematography looked good, nothing we haven't seen before; however I did notice that it resembled the Bourne films quite a lot (not surprising considering it is the same director) and for this movie it seems to work. Obviously, you can't just go throw the shaky cam into any old movie, it won't work, but here it seems to do its job quite well.
The overall tone of the trailer was very gritty and raw, and that seems to be the directing style of Greengrass; and for the movies that he makes (fast paced, gritty movies) it generally works. Here it doesn't seem as though there will be an exception to that. I mean a movie about modern day Pirates Hijacking a Cargo ship? Seems like it is going to be a pretty intense movie to me, and the gritty style that Greengrass appears to have chosen fits the mood of the story perfectly.
An example of this would be when the Pirates are actually in the process of taking over the ship in the trailer. The camera is all shaky with quick cuts back and forth between the pirates and the Captain. It is all happening so quickly and you get a feel for the chaos that Captain Phillips must be going through.
The way the pirates put the crew in charge of their allies when they say "In one Minute I will kill all your friends" really gets me intrigued. Human nature is always interesting to me and it is also interesting to see how the director decides to portray it. In a movie that is based on a true story, I am really curious to see how the people on board respond to the Pirate attack. Will they let the people die? Or will they try and go to save them. The pirates quite blatantly stated they were going to kill their allies, and now I am curious to see how the rest of the crew will respond to that. Will they reveal themselves and take that risk? Will the pirates even kill them? All of these things combined make for a very intense scene.
The only thing in this that I really had a problem is was Tom Hanks accent. It's not that it was bad, it's just that it is Tom Hanks with an accent. I have a feeling that pretty early on in the movie I won't even notice it, but just from watching the trailer it really stood out to me. I don't know, perhaps you didn't even even think about it.
Overall, I am very excited to see how this movie plays out, I love the style the director is taking and with a great story and an amazing actor, I am really interested in seeing how this ends up.
